THE TURTLE VILLAGE
|
| |
Senegal |
| |
"The citizens of my village are giant turtles !" . The giant spurred tortoise of continental Africa is the largest of its kind in the world.Such turtles often surpass 100 kg and may live 150 years. Venerated in the Sahel, these turtles are considered a legendary mediator between humans and their divinities, and have always symbolized happiness, fertility and longevity. Nowadays, these turtles are hunted down and sold, eaten or transformed into pets, and are in great danger of extinction," explained an indignant and saddened Tomas Diagne. The thirty something Senegalese man is a great lover of nature, and one day he decided that the last specimens of this ancient species had to be saved. How ? By founding a village, of which there is no other of the like in all Africa, in which giant turtles live peacefully among others of their kind, in total freedom, but protected from their mortal enemy : man ! |
